Description

Caustic soda (NaOH), also known as sodium hydroxide is a strong, clear to hazy, liquid base. Sodium hydroxide is produced (along with chlorine and hydrogen) via the diaphragm or newer membrane electrolytic process, yielding a high purity caustic soda solution.

Applications

Caustic Soda is used in many industries as a strong chemical base in the manufacture of pulp and paper, alumina, refineries, textiles, water treatment, chemical intermediates, soaps and detergents.

Product Grades

Vertex offers the two most widely used grades of caustic soda:

  • Diaphragm - Standard grade caustic
  • Membrane - High purity, low salt caustic

Both grades are available via company owned tank trucks or rail cars.

Sodium hydroxide is completely ionic, containing sodium ions and hydroxide ions.

The hydroxide ion makes sodium hydroxide a strong base which reacts with acids to form water and the corresponding salts.  As an example, with hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride is formed.
