What Is Responsible Care®?
Responsible Care® is a commitment, signed by a chemical company's Chief Executive Officer (or equivalent in that country) and carried out by all employees, to continuous improvement in health, safety and environmental performance, and to openness and transparency with stakeholders. It helps companies improve performance by identifying and spreading good management practices, and promotes mutual support between companies and associations through experience sharing and peer pressure.
Responsible Care® is a global chemical industry performance initiative that is implemented in the United States through the American Chemistry Council. In the U.S., Responsible Care companies have reduced environmental releases by 78 percent and achieved an employee safety record that is more than five times safer than the average of the U.S. manufacturing sector.
Vertex Commitment
Vertex became a member of the American Chemistry Council (originally Chemical Manufacturers Association) in 1996. Vertex has been a member of The Chlorine Institute since 1981 and has forged policies to control and continually improve its health, environmental, safety and security posture.
Since 1986 Vertex has organized annual HESS information meetings and drills with plant tours at each Vertex facility. Vertex invites the participation of the community, neighbors, local Emergency Response personnel, local government and “stakeholders.” Turnout and response to these programs has been consistently good and feedback positive. Detailed Safety/Emergency Response plans have been in the hands of local Emergency Response personnel for many years, and Vertex participates in local Emergency Response practice sessions.
Vertex is committed to safely manufacture, package, process, terminal, transload, and deliver a variety of liquid inorganics using best Responsible Care® practices.
